This same rationale (well, lack thereof) can be seen in fundamentalist Christian Bible-thumpers today. They cite the Old Testament when talking about why certain things are forbidden, but they fail to take into account the context under which those original rules were laid down. Many foods and practices were forbidden back then due simply to hygienic reasons-- hygienic conditions which have since vastly improved, so those restrictions no longer apply.

It's hard to wrest "tradition" away from those who have clung to it generation after generation...
