its indeed nice to find a positive and constructive post on the need to tackle gender bias in marriages because of its various ramifications in today's day and age :-)

in our eastern cultures, the problem i find with most people (largely women) is that they are unable to overcome this imaginary wall of stereotypes. such people remain lost in mundane rhetoric of what "doesn't can't work" and totally lose focus from what "can be done".

The amusing part was that the women treated the notion as if it were some kind of condescending joke, as if to say, "oh, men are such babies, they wouldn't know what to do with themselves, we women the smart, capable ones who can juggle careers AND a household", but I knew that in reality, sadly, the men DID view it as being beneath them.

You're right about the mentality that men are incapable of doing domestic work. It often leads to the notion that somehow domestic work is beneath men, and a woman must do it, irrespective of her career. It might have been true in the past, but is hopelessly outdated now.

I also find it amusing how such thought is viewed as "Western", at least in India. They are likely to think of these developments as quirky "Western" notions rather than serious shifts due to a change in lifestyle.

I saw this in Indonesia, as well, where I spent 2 weeks this past October, visiting family.

While most of the women I met had educations and careers, there still seemed to be an underlying mentality that men are incapable of doing anything domestic, including raise kids.

I went with my parents, so Allan got to play "single dad" for 2 weeks. Many women asked me who was taking care of my son while I was away, and they all expressed amazement that my husband was managing the household and the kid in my absence. They told me that you'd never see an Indonesian man doing that! I found it amusing and sad at the same time.
